Everything about your gut flora and probiotics

After weight loss surgery, a lot changes in your body. Including in your gut. You eat differently and may experience stress. This can throw your gut flora out of balance. But what exactly is gut flora? And what can you do when that balance is disrupted? Read all about it in this blog.

What is your gut flora?

Your intestines contain an enormous number of micro-organisms. Most of these are bacteria, yeasts, and fungi. Together, they make up your gut flora.

The composition of your gut flora is unique to each person. This is determined by your genes and what you eat. Each bacterium has a different specialisation. One bacterium works well for fibre. Another works better for sugar. So depending on what kind of food you eat, you have a different gut flora composition.

If you change your diet for health reasons - for example, by eating more fibre - your gut flora needs some time to adjust and produce more bacteria that work well with fibre. The composition of your gut flora can therefore change.

The balance in your gut

Your gut flora contains both good and bad bacteria. Good bacteria are beneficial - they help with your digestion. Bad bacteria are pathogens. You won't be bothered by them if there are only a few. But if there are too many, you can start to feel unwell.

Eating a varied diet helps keep the bacteria in balance. Foods such as fruit, vegetables, nuts, and yoghurt provide a good foundation. Daily movement and avoiding stress also help maintain the balance.

What if there is no balance?

Various situations can throw your gut flora out of balance:

  • You eat less due to weight loss surgery or appetite suppressants.
  • You eat differently than you're used to. For example, more protein and less fat.
  • Weight loss surgery can cause a lot of stress.
  • You have low energy, which means you don't move enough.
  • You have had a course of antibiotics.

Your gut flora needs a few weeks to adjust to the changes and find a new balance. You may notice this through digestive complaints such as bloating, diarrhoea, or constipation. This usually resolves on its own.

How you can support your gut

You can support your gut while it finds that balance again by staying well hydrated, eating a varied diet, and keeping active. Probiotics can also help as extra support when needed.

Probiotics are good, living micro-organisms. They can have a positive effect on your gut health when you take enough of them. And they need to reach your gut alive. Only then can they help restore the balance in your gut flora.

Unfortunately, many of these good bacteria are already broken down in your stomach and small intestine. That is why a probiotic product should contain at least 1 billion living micro-organisms, so that enough of them reach your gut alive.

FitForMe Digestive Balance with probiotics

Does your body need extra support? Then there is Digestive Balance from FitForMe. Each serving contains 10 billion live cultures to support your gut every day.

Digestive Balance consists of 2 cultures of good bacteria:

  1. Lactobacillus acidophilus. Found mainly in the small intestine. It helps with breaking down food and maintaining a balance in your gut flora.
  2. Bifidobacterium lactis. Found in the large intestine. Here it supports bowel movements and contributes to a healthy intestinal lining.

With just 1 serving per day, you support your gut where it needs it.
